Alkaline Diet

An alkaline diet is important for optimal natural bone health. Body internal acidity damages our internal ecosystem. Most of us consume diets high in acid-forming foods. This results in chronic, low-grade acidosis. Precious alkali salts of bone building minerals are then taken from bones and used for buffering these internal acids. Therefore, we encourage an alkaline diet high in foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, spices, herbs, seasoning, seeds and pulses such as lentils. Alkaline Diet is the food consisting mainly of fruits, vegetables, and milk with little meat, fish, eggs, cheese, and cereals, that when catabolised leaves an alkaline residue to be excreted in the urine. Due to our life styles and environments the body cannot get rid of all the acidic waste products that it generates within. Therefore, these left over waste products accumulates somewhere within our body. Root cause of such accumulation has been pointed to, lack of digestion, overwork, not taking enough rest, staying up late at night, not having proper exercise, inadequate water consumption, smoking, environment pollution, and even low alkaline diet etc.

Robert Young authors alkaline Diet book. Therefore, it is often referred as Robert Young’s Alkaline Diet. Alkaline diet ia also called an acid-alkaline diet because it produces about 80% alkaline and 20% acid. The theory behind this diet is that the pH produced by our diet should reflect the pH level of our bloodstream, which is approximately 7.36.

All foods and drinks consumed are burned down to an ash residue when metabolized. The outcome of this is either an alkaline or acidifying effect on the body, especially the blood. Food may be classified as alkaline, such as vegetables, certain fruits, nuts, grains and seeds. While acid-forming foods are processed foods, sugar, meat, dairy, caffeine, alcohol, refined foods and saturated fats. A study shows that the importance of acid-alkaline balance is more widely recognized in Europe than in the US.

According to Dr. Young, primarily good health depends in proper balance between an alkaline and acid environment.

When body become too acidic, it will take necessary steps to balance the blood. Thus bodies will begin to break down and show signs of disease including flu, skin disorders, obesity, osteoperosis, and even cancer etc. Dr. Young suggests that the body uses its stores of the alkaline mineral calcium in order to neutralize excess acidity - which in turn can lead to lower bone density or osteoporosis. The alkaline diet has similarities with the Dr. Hay Diet, which is also based on avoiding presumably acid food.

In a symposium in Germany in the year 2000, many researchers presented papers on topics ranging from the role of bone in providing alkaline-mineral reserves to a history of nutrition and acid-base physiology to the impact of stress and exercise on alkaline-acid- balance. These papers presented excellent knowledge on metabolic acidosis and its physiological repercussions. Abstracts from this important symposium are available at the website www.saeure-basen-forum.de. A healthy human-arterial blood pH varies between 7.35 and 7.45. The acid status of the body i.e. pH is continuously regulated by the kidneys and the lungs. The human body corrects for either respiratory or metabolic acidosis to maintain normal pH. If all this is what is stated by medical science, then the claim of Dr. Young has no substance.
