Diet Coca Cola commonly known and referred as Diet Coke is produced and distributed by The Coca Cola Company. It is a sugar free soft drink and trademarked as Coca-Cola. In some countries outside Northern America, Diet Coke is called Coca-Cola Light or Coke Light. Diet Coke is the #1 selling sugar-free soda in the world. Pepsi launched Diet Pepsi in 1964, which is a low calorie carbonated cola. This is a variant of Pepsi Cola with no sugar. In some countries, Diet Pepsi is known as Pepsi Light. Diet Coke does not utilize a modification of the normal formula of the Coca-Cola recipe but is instead uses an entirely different formula. This controversial diet coke used a version of the Diet Coke recipe that contained fructose corn syrup and had a little different balance of ingredients. But, in 2004 Coca-Cola introduced Coca Cola C2, which tastes much closer to Coca-Cola but contains half quantity of the carbohydrates.

• Some predict that Diet Coke will soon overtake Pepsi and Coca-Cola as the #1 soft drink in the USA because, over the last decade, both Pepsi and Coca-Cola Classic had lost market share and Diet Coke has gained market share (up to 9.8% in 2005).
Commercials refer only to Coke Light or Coca-Cola Light or Diet Coke. In most of Europe, the drink is marketed as Coca-Cola Light.
