Phentermine

Phentermine is the most commonly prescribed as appetite suppressant. It is quite cheap as compared to other major diet drugs like Meridia and Xenical. It is generally prescribed for weight loss to individuals who are at increased medical risk because of their excess weight.

Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1959 approved this medicine as an appetite suppressant for the short-term treatment of obesity. Phentermine hydrochloride then became available in the early 1970s. Phentermine is sold either as an immediate-release formulation or as a slow-release resin. In the US, Phentermine is currently sold under the brand names Ionamin and Adipex. It is also available as a generic medication, known as “phentermine”. Phentermine is available by itself in most countries, including the U.S.A. The most recent study was in 1990 which combined phentermine with fenfluramine or dexfenfluramine and became known as Fen-Phen. Although Fen-Phen was never approved by the FDA the agency did approve of the drug. A study was published in 1992 that Fen-Phen was more effective than diet and exercise with few side effects. But later on, in 1997 when 24 cases of heart valve disease were reported for Fen-Phen. Then fenfluramine and dexfenfluramine were voluntarily taken off the market at the request of the FDA.

Research studies reported that about 30% of people taking fenfluramine or dexfenfluramine had abnormal valve findings. The FDA did not ask manufacturers to remove phentermine from the market.

Since individuals may develop an addition to this drug, hence, in many countries it is classified as a controlled weight loss drug.Phentermine, like many other prescription drugs, which works as stimulant appetite suppressant. It puts a halt to the hunger signal, which causes a loss in appetite because the brain does not receive the hunger message. Phentermine stimulates the central nervous system (nerves and brain), which increases your heart rate and blood pressure and decreases your appetite. The neurotransmitters signal a fight-or-flight response in the body which, in turn, puts a halt to the hunger signal. As a result, it causes a loss in appetite because the brain does not receive the hunger message.

Phentermine should be used for short term of up to 3 months. Phentermine is habit forming. You can become physically and psychologically dependent on this medication, and withdrawal effects may occur if you stop taking it suddenly after several weeks of continuous use. It should be accompanied by other healthy weight loss regimen of moderate exercise and healthy dieting. Dieting is the practice of consuming foods in a regulated manner to achieve weight loss by losing excess fat. Due to the risk of insomnia (loss of sleep), it is generally recommended that the drug be taken either before breakfast or after breakfast.

Phentermine is usually taken once or twice a day before a meal on an empty stomach. Take each dose with a full glass of water. Do not crush, chew or open any "once-daily" phentermine tablets or capsules. Swallow them whole. Do not take phentermine in the evening because it may cause insomnia.
